Bike Snob NYC: The BSNYC April Fools' Day Round-Up: "Today is April 1st. Rest assured I have no intention of engaging in any April Fools' Day-related tomfoolery, nor do I plan to observe its stupid French counterpart, Poisson d'Avril. Instead, I've decided to jump around the cycling world and take a look at some of the better pranks on offer elsewhere. So get ready to laugh--I promise you'll split your sides...

#61 Bicycles « Stuff White People Like: "A good place to find white people on a Saturday is at a Bike Shop. Bike shops are almost entirely staffed and patronized by white people!

But not all white people love bicycles in the same way, there is much diversity. First up, we have the younger urban white folks who absolutely love their fixed gear bicycles. These are seen all over college towns, Silverlake in LA, Williamsburg in Brooklyn, Queen West in Toronto, and Victoria, British Columbia. Fixed gear bicycles meet a lot of requirements for white person acceptance. They can"

Bike Snob NYC: More BSNYC In Print: The Reign of Terror Continues: "At the end of last week I revealed that I had entered the rarified world of cyclists who get special online discounts just for being themselves. At the risk of further alienating my readership, today I’m also proud to announce that I’m apparently a VIC. (That’s a “Very Important Cyclist” to you.) That’s right, I’ve just been published in the Official Program and Ride Guide for the Five Boro Bike Tour, which is sponsored by some bank whose name I’m not going to mention. I’d also like to put additional emphasis on the fact that this is the official program, and...

Fixed Gear Blog: MTB Jocks hate Fixie Hipsters in Germany too.: "Cheeky hat made of imitation denim with wannabe sponsor logo
Insect-resistant and stylish 'nose-bike' (slang for sunglasses)
Model: Mandy Whorehole
Alternative: Eyepatch or 'wood-eye' (like the eye in a plank of wood)
Weight-optimizied acceleration baby-beard
Model: booger- and snot-retardant 'respect beam' (I think this is more unusual slang for mustache)
Alternative: None, really. Ah, well, maybe black sharpie.
Nitto NJS handlebars & stem
(limited edition anodized = powerful penis enlargement)
NJS-stamped track components generally increase the style and standing of fixie-pilots and will give your rivals even worse penis envy and make them salivate uncontrollably.
Alternative: Forget it, kid.
Tri- or Aerospoke front wheel
Most important is that it is made of plastic and is usable (I could be wrong if Platik isn't a typo for Plastik)
It doesn't make sense, but hipsters don't give a shit.
Trispokes and Aerospokes ride steady. End of story. ('ride steady' is a guess)
Alternative: Preferably a colored deep-V
Model: (no idea here) Accelerator, Scumpagnalo Pasta or Clammy Nippleator.
Funny stickers, postage stamps or pornographic images emphasizing urban appearance and uglification (theft deterrence), as well as the personalization of your fixie."

Positive Thinking Quotes: Enthusiasm In Your Work Does Miracles !

Positive Thinking Quotes: Enthusiasm In Your Work Does Miracles !: "Enthusiasm In Your Work Does Miracles !

Enthusiasm makes even difficult things easy. Enthusiasm makes the biggest obstacle look like a very tiny one. It makes even a storm(toofan) to be like a gift(tohfa) and makes us enjoy each situation like a game. And when we have the awareness that there's nothing that is difficult, we can surely achieve what we want to. We should be able to change our consciousness in such a way that when obstacles come our way, we should automatically be filled with more enthusiasm to work at and overcome these obstacles. With our enthusiasm we will surely find a way to make things happen."

Belgium Knee Warmers: The Crash: "In the moment of the unfolding the brain’s most primitive, most knowing, self registers a change which radiates out as instantly as light, and our stomachs confuse with the drop of an elevator: Something is wrong.

Whether the event is a yard sale of our cycling self strewn with the force of a wet dog shaking itself dry or the seemingly accelerated zoom view of the single fence post growing as we slide toward it,"

A BSNYC Exclusive: A First Look at the New Dura Ace!

Here in the Atlantic Northeast, it’s nearly Spring. Bike shops are beginning to swell with barely-ridden bicycles in for overpriced annual tune-ups. Fixed-gear riders are daring to remove their bandanas and expose their bare faces to the wind. And the air will soon be filled with love and pollen."

So I'll be cashing some of that in next week. Consider it a week-long 'Snobbatical.' I will resume regular updates on Monday, March 17th....

by Edmond Hood

It takes a while, a decent Michelin map, and some luck to find Hamish Haynes' house. The tiny village where he lives is near the the town of Tienen in the Belgian province of Brabant, not far from Holland. There's no café or shop close by, and only rabbits in search of tastier pickings across the road see us arrive. The neighborhood dogs hear us though and their barking echoes across the still, dark fields....

Crap Cycling & Walking in Waltham Forest: The hazards of Lea Bridge Road: "One week after a pedestrian was run down and killed the flowers at the site have grown but there is still no police sign appealing for witnesses.

From the local weekly Guardian, which has extensive coverage and some graphic photographs:

THE man who tried to save the life of pedestrian Joe Sheridan, killed in Lea Bridge Road last Thursday, has witnessed four other accidents in the same place in six years. His wife's father was also knocked down on a nearby zebra crossing. Malcolm Durrant, landlord of the Hare and Hounds pub in Lea Bridge Road, Leyton, said: 'One time I saw a man flying through the air. And in the 1990s a lorry clipped a cyclist's back wheel and killed her instantly. Some drivers are oblivious. The road is this bad because it's so long and so straight. They should have some sort of chicane system like in countries abroad.'"

Dave Moulton's Bike Blog: Taping Handlebars: "Taping Handlebars

Re-taping handlebars is one of those jobs that most cyclists have done many times. However, there has to be those out there doing it for the first time, and handlebar tape for some strange reason, is usually sold in a packet with no instructions what so ever.

It is as if a cyclist is supposed to be born with some divine instinct on how to apply new tape to handlebars. So for the uninitiated here is a pictorial step by step of how I do it.

On opening the package there is sometimes a short piece of tape with an adhesive strip on the back."

Last October a new cycling Classic emerged combining some of the epic conditions of Paris-Roubaix with the golden age of Italian cycling’s history. In the 1950s when cycling was the king of sports in Italy due to the epic battles between Fausto Coppi and Gino Bartali cycling was much grittier (literally) than today’s sport. Long distances with no support on mostly gravely or loose stone roads. Distances would routinely touch 300km or so and races would start in the early mornings. Cycling in Post-War times was much different than today. With the rich Italian history The Monte Paschi Eroica (not Erotica get that mind out of the gutter or check out the Elisa Basso pics) get today’s pro cyclist out in conditions of old. RCS Sport the Giro organizers are also responsible for this race."

I’m sure that everone who cares already knows that Alley Cat races have been permanently canceled. I have heard the sob stories, offered a shoulder to cry on, and even shed a tear myself.

But now it’s all over…

I can assure all you cats that the Alliance will have some event for us all to get together and have a good time, soon. We may not race, but we will gather and we will ride our bikes cause that’s what it was really all about anyways. I found it interesting that those who were so upset about the HJ article could not complain about anything they had directly felt. In our defense, we did these races for five months consecutively and no one noticed any change in drivers attitudes, no one could complain about actually seeing us run a stop sign, or had heard about a bunch of drunk cyclists “drag racing” through the streets. I think we all know that this is because we weren’t really causing any problems. We are just a group of people who like to ride our bikes and would never do anything that would change us being able to do that."

Have you seen the movie “Breaking Away“? Other than Dennis Quaid in his early 20’s with no shirt on, you will find a great coming of age story where local boys struggle with social stereo types, love and some killer bicycle racing. The race is called the “Little Indy 500“. The Little 500 is a team relay race. Teams of 3 or 4 riders take turns on the same bike and also share a helmet. The bicycles are 1 speed with a coaster brake or a fixed gear. A small group of us here in Eugene decided to have a go at the “Little Eugene 100″. We found an old dirt track in North Eugene at a torn down Elementary School. Fun was had by all."

One of the greatest things about cycling is the cyclist themselves. We come in all different shapes and sizes with different backgrounds and ability levels. Take this weekend for example. I spent thirty-minuets sharing stories and discussing gear ratios with complete strangers in front of the coffee shop. One was of the jean wearing commuter type while another was a hard core fan/tour junkie. Of course I was the lycra wearing racer type. We ranged in age from 28-60 and weight from 170 -240 but none of that mattered. We all experienced the same joy and satisfaction while on the bike. And even though we experience these joys at different speeds we were all able to relate and have a good time. When the older, overweight gentleman’s wife finally got tired of listening to him tell us about he glory days, it was time for us to ride our separate ways. I don’t know if I will ever see these guys again but it was a pleasure meeting them and I can’t help but wonder, who I'll meet on the next ride."

Let the birds out! Over at Dave Moulton's Blog he recently made an entry about some of the terminology used by many of the new comers to the Track Bike Blow-Up. He asks you to free the gear...so the wheel can be fixed. Then for the masses to recognize that when you go into a bike shop and ask for cages...this image is all the bicycle shop employee can think about. That little pause is not because we don't know what you want but is because we are thinking about all the birds we could free if you really wanted cages.

Cover of Wielercafes in Vlaanderen by Walter RottiersMy final evening in Belgium this past November was spent in Brussels conversing with a couple of native Flandriens in a smoky, Flemish bar. While we touched on a variety of subjects, the heart of our conversation dwelled on two topics near and dear to my heart: beer and pro cycling (more specifically, this evening, all things beer and pro cycling in Flanders). I was reminded of that particular conversation this past weekend while noticing a sure sign of spring in North Carolina–the sudden proliferation of daffodils emerging overnight en-masse as if by magic. To my Flandrien friends the telltale harbinger of spring was represented by one annual, blockbuster event: Het Volk (occurring the same day all of our daffodils sprouted this side of the Atlantic). It was with almost religious fervor that they spoke of Het Volk, ensuing hints of blue sky and warmer weather, and the steady crescendo of racing throughout March culminating in early April with the largest event on the Flandrien calendar: The Ronde…part Super Bowl, part Fourth of July, part Holy Day."

Bike Snob NYC

Bike Snob NYC: "With its surgical cap seat cover, ample fluids, and killer whale noisemaker, this bike looks like a jovial Patch Adams-type doctor making the rounds and entertaining patients in a children's hospital ward. My biggest complaint here is that the modest $220 price tag doesn't include the fork-mounted cage, since if you're the kind of person who wears a wrist wallet that's probably an accessory you'd want. In a nod to current fashion I also note the owner has left the very ends of the bars untaped, so while it's not a full-on dog erection tape job it does at least evoke a canine in a mild state of arousal. I rate this one a strong 'buy' for the entertainment value alone"

Worst of NYC Craigslist Bike Ads #28-#32

If you’re familiar with the scene in “Trainspotting” where Ewan MacGregor goes diving into that ungodly toilet in search of his narcotic suppository then you have some idea what it’s like to go looking for bicycles in the NYC Craigslist bikes for sale section. If you’re not, then imagine passing a house with a lot of crap in the front lawn and not being able to tell whether they’re having a yard sale or are simply gutting the place. Craig should move all the bike stuff over to the 'free' section so we can get rid of it and start over. Here is some of the best of the worst that Craigslist has to offer:"

Sure, there's Versus and their potent cocktail of professional road racing, rodeo, and hockey, but after that it's a precipitous drop into the world of public access cycling shows. And while I applaud their DIY efforts, watching grainy helmet-cam images of neon windbreaker-clad men with helmet cams on hybrids is more like watching moon rover footage than cycling programming. After that, the only thing left is Youtube. So I say that, like the trackstand-impaired, we put our collective foot down and demand some shows. Here is some of what what you'll be able to see on my fantasy network:"
